Why People Didnt Accept Your LinkedIn Request - The Muse

Why People Didnt Accept Your LinkedIn Request - The Muse Why People Didnt Accept Your LinkedIn Request Not very far in the past, I had an instinctive response when I read about how Muse author Kat Boogaard acknowledged more than 300 irregular LinkedIn demands. It strengthened my position that I'd possibly acknowledge them when they were joined by a short note. No truly, including a note with respect to why we ought to interface makes it such a great amount of simpler to state yes. (What's more, on the off chance that you have no clue about what to state in that note, here are a couple of layouts.) For what other reason would I turn you down? Here are a couple of more reasons: 1. You Asked for Way Too Much Right Off the Bat The way that I compose vocation guidance articles professionally is evidence that I truly appreciate helping individuals. Indeed, even with two occupations, I get a surge out of giving somebody a resume, introductory letter, or meeting tip that may assist them with getting their next activity. Be that as it may, when individuals approach me for additional top to bottom discussions free, I'm helped to remember the time I contacted an essayist I respected and basically beseeched him to assist me with breaking into the universe of sports news coverage. At that point, I was unable to understand why he disregarded me. In any case, in the wake of being on the opposite side of the fence a bunch of times, I comprehend that as much as individuals need to enable, they to have indistinguishable number of hours from all of us. In this way, start little. Request to interface first. Furthermore, from that point onward, stay aware of that individual you appreciate periodically by preferring statuses and saying something with remarks when it bodes well. This will cause it less astounding when you to request things like occupation tips, referrals, and acquaintances with other idea pioneers. 2. You Tried to Connect in Too Many Places, Too Fast There are a ton of anecdotes about individuals interfacing with complete outsiders who they appreciate on LinkedIn. I'm supportive of this on the off chance that you can pull it off. Furthermore, on the off chance that you do it with a touch of affability, it very well may be commonly gainful for you and the individual you're connecting with. Actually, in the event that you need a few hints on the most proficient method to do it, look at this article. In any case, I've additionally had a couple of encounters in which these outsiders took things a piece excessively far. Now and again, I'm discussing individuals catching up with a forceful email inquiring as to why I hadn't acknowledged right away. In others, individuals have tweeted at me to attempt to persuade me to associate ASAP. Is determination commendable? Here and there. In any case, by and large, it's ideal to let things inhale before you check in once more, particularly when you're managing somebody who has no clue about what your identity is. As a general rule, an insightful message will prompt an association regardless of whether it takes the individual a couple of days to see it. 3. You Spelled My Name Wrong Indeed, despite the fact that my name is truly on my profile, individuals spell it wrong. Also, indeed, I do anticipate that you should edit, regardless of whether you're doing this on your telephone. So twofold (and triple-check) whenever you connect. Obviously, this won't ensure that they'll acknowledge. In any case, it'll in any event shield you from irritating them and failing to get acknowledged. 4. Your Message Was a Little Too Personal At the point when a solicitation accompanies a short, customized message, I will in general acknowledge regardless of whether I've never met the individual, all things considered. For instance, this is normally a hit: Hello Rich, I'm a gigantic devotee of [your work/ongoing project]. You truly motivated me to [something that you did in light of the fact that you admire this person]. I'd love to interface on LinkedIn! Truly, You In any case, previously, I've gotten very long messages that while complimenting, make me somewhat apprehensive to leave my loft (half-joking!). Certainly, perhaps you can discover a ton of data across different stages out there. Be that as it may, in the event that you consolidate all that you can gain from all my web-based social networking profiles into one message, it goes too far, and honestly makes me somewhat reluctant to acknowledge. LinkedIn can be an integral asset that permits you to interface with individuals you'd in any case never meet. In any case, in case you're not cautious about how you approach them, you could cut off up costing yourself some important associations. I'm not saying to abstain from attempting no truly, attempt! I'm stating that you should simply utilize good judgment when you're doing it.

#1 Reason Executives Should Comment on Blogs - Work It Daily

#1 Reason Executives Should Comment on Blogs - Work It Daily I as of late talked at an occasion brimming with administrators and was posed the inquiry, What's the most straightforward approach to begin connecting with online life as an approach to support my profession? My answer was basic: Get a Gravatar and remark on websites. A Gravatar is a free profile you set up that is joined to a specific email address. You should choose a location you need to use to coordinate with individuals on the web (for example Gmail record), and afterward construct a straightforward profile that clarifies what issues you understand. Visit Gravatar.com to set yours up. When you have a Gravatar, whenever you remark on a blog with the email address related with the Gravatar, the profile will consequently append to your remark on the blog. From that point, I recommend administrators distinguish three to five sites identified with their industry or field of aptitude (these can be significant news source sites also like Forbes, Fast Company, Inc., and so forth.), and begin to remark on articles they find intriguing. Essentially look down to the base of the article to check whether there is a remark choice. At that point, set up your considerations and post them. That is it! Note: Commenting is about quality, not amount. The key is to be insightful and valuable in your remarking. Envision there was a live discussion among your friends going on identified with the article. What might you say to situate yourself as educated, trusted, and in particular, regarded? That is the thing that ought to be posted on the web. From that point forward, when individuals begin to look on your name on the web, your remarks will come up in the inquiry. This is an awesome method to manufacture your online nearness and give individuals a feeling of your correspondence and administration style as an official. 5 Ways Recruiting has Become a Collaborative Process - Workology

5 Ways Recruiting has Become a Collaborative Process - Workology Team hiring takes the stress off of the individual and thwarts unconscious biases Hiring the wrong candidate doesn’t just affect the hiring manager; it affects the company as a whole and the people that work hard to keep it afloat. If someone is not on board with the values and goals that your business wants to uphold, it can be detrimental. Bad hires waste time and resources. How do you know if your next hire will mesh with the ecosystem of your workplace? You collaborate. Team hiring has become more commonplace, because employers are realizing the importance of everyone being on the same page. There are benefits, monetarily and otherwise, to be gleaned from distributing the recruitment process workload across the office. If done correctly, you will save money, boost employee retention, experience less burnout, and more! Read on to find out the ways in which the HR field is moving in the right, collaborative direction. 1. Employees showcase the company goals and values Getting the team involved in the hiring process pays off in terms of attracting the right talent. In fact, employees may be the best ambassadors for your company. 75% of job seekers consider an employer’s brand before even applying for a job. It is obvious that taking the time to establish employer branding with plenty of team input will do for your hiring performance. Testimonials from inside the workplace will give potential applicants a sense of what they can expect if hired. This results in not only more candidates, but better quality hires that are already on board with the views of the existing employees. 2. The picture of the ideal hire becomes clearer In addition to presenting the right image to potential candidates, working together also creates a better image of which candidate would be the perfect fit. Rather than selecting candidates who can hold the best conversations with the interviewers, modern companies are starting to think critically about the ideal hire. Ideas from the whole team give a broader sense of who will mesh and lead to a more complete list of characteristics and skills to look for in a candidate. The key is to use this list of requirements the team came up with to form job descriptions that depict the ideal hires. This way, unqualified candidates are much less likely to apply, and you can focus on shortlisting the quality candidates for further evaluation, saving tons of time in the process. 3. The value of employee networks is being realized Employee referrals are rarely implemented, but when they are, they result in more successful job matches and quality hires. With rules in place, employee networks can provide the perfect fit more easily and quickly than any other sourcing technique. As long as you set guidelines and offer an easy way to suggest candidates, such as a sourcing extension that automatically inputs potential candidate data into your talent pools, your candidate quality will increase. Offering incentives is another tactic that employers are using to boost employee participation (rather than forcing it). Having a say in the overall work environment will increase morale and camaraderie, as well. It’s ideal that employees will want to refer quality candidates for the good of the company. If a company’s culture is solid, this works to their advantage. If yours is lacking in the culture department, start acting on it today. 4. Interviewing as a team unveils candidate personality It’s not just about sourcing. Interview techniques are being implemented that involve everyone in the office. This may seem overzealous, but it isn’t as labor intensive as you would think. An interviewee will always put their best foot forward, so employers are being creative in order to see through this facade. The best way to do so is with unusual interviews. Rather than sticking to the norm of one interviewer running the show, conduct a ‘team test’. To give an example, Julie Gurner, doc of psychology and advocate of all things productivity, favors the practice of team interviewing. The true interview starts as soon as the candidate meets the first member of the team. Throughout the process, the direct team members they could be working with will meet the candidate. This way, they can fill out score cards based on desirable personality traits that the candidate expressed (or did not express). This gives everyone a say in the decision, and the candidate is less likely to have prepared for these interactions, so they will be natural and unrehearsed. Team hiring takes the stress off of the individual and thwarts unconscious biases When the entirety of the hiring is delegated to one or two HR personnel, they may buckle under the pressure. Considering cost-per-hire is highly dependent upon time until hire, HR may have a strict deadline. This causes fatigue and, sometimes, quick decisions that are influenced by biases, whether they are intended or not. Unruly HR management (i.e., Uber) has been all over the news as of late. This is causing companies to rethink their strategy, particularly when biases are influencing hiring decisions. With more people weighing in on hiring decisions, there is less of a chance that biases, intended or not, are swaying the outcome.

Why Small Business Must Compete on Compensation in 2015

Why Small Business Must Compete on Compensation in 2015 Why Small Business Must Compete on Compensation in 2015 Why Small Business Must Compete on Compensation in 2015 Rossheim Independent companies delighted in something of a remuneration vacation in the years following the 2007-2009 recessionary years. Laborers were so calmed to remain utilized or to land any sort of position offer that numerous never thought about anticipating more. Yet, the wedding trip might be finished. Today, developing organizations must figure out how to seek ability with organizations everything being equal, wherever on the planet, in all fields, including worker pay. Heres a gathering of independent company pay patterns and difficulties for 2015. Biased compensation can be harmful. Disparity in pay can be especially damaging to worker confidence and dependability in little firms where its difficult to keep privileged insights. Organizations certainly ought to be worried about compensation value, however this frequently gets ignored, says Elissa Tucker, explore program chief for human capital administration at business look into not-for-profit APQC. Individuals will get separated rapidly if recently recruited employees come in at an altogether higher rate. This is not entirely obvious. Fixed compensation, high whittling down? Execution based remuneration, long well known for most organizations of any size, is, in 2015, a virtual need. In any case, approximately 28 percent of little organizations don't offer variable compensation motivators, as indicated by the PayScale 2015 Compensation Best Practices report. Why? Entrepreneurs have a ton of balls noticeable all around they may not pondering the components of pay, says Tim Low, Vice President of Marketing at counseling firm Payscale. Private ventures stress progressively over the dangers of variable compensation, yet its the market pattern. Previously, this has implied the normal pay at numerous little organizations has slacked corresponding to the general market. Obviously, neglecting to pay for execution raises another hazard: wearing down of top entertainers. Variable compensation: Ever more extensive and more profound. In 2015, its insufficient to offer to execution based compensation to only a couple of top supervisors. Variable compensation has been widened to remember all representatives for some associations, says Ken Abosch, a cooperate with counseling firm Aon Hewitt. Normal variable compensation has arrived at a record elevated level of 12 percent of complete compensation. Which variable-pay plans are winning? Independent companies regularly incline toward the least complex sort of execution rewards: spot rewards allowed precipitously for an occupation very much done for the current month or even today. Be that as it may, such rewards may not adjust well to the companys long haul methodology, and they can seem subjective. There are unrivaled alternatives, however they require more work to actualize. Singular execution rewards for arriving at explicit objectives are extremely famous, says Abosch. The most famous presentation based extra rewards a blend of organization, specialty unit and individual accomplishments. Organization proprietors may not make the best remuneration directors. With rivalry for ability warming up, private company boss ought to consider getting master exhortation on their pay plans. Since when proprietors set compensation all alone, naturally would be the strategic word for how they do it, says Tim Low at PayScale. The character type isn't reluctant to make a plunge. Exactly 52 percent of little organization boss set compensation structures themselves, as indicated by PayScales 2015 Compensation Best Practices report. Bigger organizations are bound to have a HR supervisor or official with skill in remuneration. Little organizations win large ability with greater cash. Independent company can win against bigger ones in ability conflicts if theyve got the finance spending plan. In the last five to eight years, Atlanta has seen a gathering of increasingly innovative, truly beneficial associations that are keeping their kin in front of the comp bend, says Frank Green, leader of search firm ExecuSearch. Green is at present working with two up-and-comers meeting for employments at littler organizations: one could land a $16,000 increment for a situation in social insurance money; the other is battling for a senior bookkeeping job that would accompany a $40,000 raise. Complete remuneration proclamations: High worth, minimal effort. Regularly disregarded, individualized complete pay proclamations, conveyed to all representatives every year, are a savvy (and reasonable) approach to remind staff that their remuneration is something other than the net compensation line on the compensation stub. Complete remuneration proclamations assist the executives with imparting the full estimation of what youre giving them, says Low. The capacity to identify all the components may open workers eyes to the estimation of medicinal services, dental, and vision protection, etc. As indicated by PayScales 2015 pay study, 58 percent of respondents detailed that they don't offer them. Finance alert for 2016: Health protection prerequisite. Under the Affordable Care Act, if your business has somewhere in the range of 50 and 99 representatives or arrives at that headcount in 2015, youll be required to give medical coverage to all day laborers in 2016, or take care of an assessment punishment. (Except if this necessity is delayed, once more.) Regardless, in the event that you dont guarantee your laborers presently, begin making arrangements for this significant finance cost and consider how you can use that venture to pull in better specialists and hold representatives.

Alexandra Levits Water Cooler Wisdom Key Decisions That Could Kill Your Business

Alexandra Levit's Water Cooler Wisdom Key Decisions That Could Kill Your Business Numerous studies and polls have been conducted on the failure rate of small businesses. Some experts estimate that 50 to 70 percent of new businesses fail within the first 18 months. While those numbers seem bleak, we dont often stop to wonder whether these promising initiatives failed due to cultural decisions made along the way. Take a look at these three companies failures and the lessons learned the hard way. Wrong Environment In 2010, after Damian Kimmelmans London-based digital design agency, We Are VI, posted a loss of approximately a quarter of a million pounds and let go 25 staff members, Kimmelman, who was the sole owner, shut down the company. Last year, when Kimmelman discussed his businesss closure with CNBC, he blamed the failure on his having spent too much time planning and not enough time doing. We Are VI was unable to juggle the demands of its big name clients, he added, and said that it hadnt established a recognizable niche in the advertising space. He also claimed that the firm would have grown if it had stuck to a single, distinctive product offering. But perhaps most telling was Kimmelmans comment that he gave up the business because he really hated agency life. This suggests that Kimmelman wasnt fully aware of the day-to-day rigors involved with managing a creative agency, and a firm with an unenthusiastic CEO at the helm will not be able to survive in the long run. The lesson? Before you launch a new business, make sure that the type of company youre planning to run, including the company culture, is a good fit for you. For more decisions that could kill your business, check out my full post at the AMEX Open Forum.

Should You Really Write Your Resume Without Any Experience?

Should You Really Write Your Resume Without Any Experience? When it comes to resume writing, most students do not have much experience in this field. This usually puts a lot of potential employers off and is the main reason why they do not produce a well-written resume. So if you are a student looking for a job, the following article should help you prepare for your future employer by giving some tips on how to improve your resume.Firstly, you need to look at your CV and find out how many years you have had a job, where you have worked and what you have worked on. It is also worth finding out about any awards and recognition you may have received, as this can boost your chances of being employed in the future. Secondly, talk to people who know more about resume writing and ask them if you have a chance of improving your CV with experience. Although many people claim to be experts on resume writing, there are always a few out there who may not be able to write your CV.Thirdly, you shou ld make sure that your CV is eye catching, contains relevant information, and is formatted well. Then you should identify what areas are needed to work on, as this will help you make sure that your CV is perfectly prepared. Finally, check to see how this CV was completed. Most people tend to only see the end result, so make sure that your CV is well written from the start. Finally, when writing your resume you should check if it has been written properly. You should always check that all the information is correct and any grammatical errors have been corrected. By doing this you can ensure that any potential employer who sees your CV knows exactly what they are getting into.Do not simply get your CV together without checking that it is correctly formatted. A poorly written CV will look sloppy and even make your potential employer think that you do not know how to write a CV. Therefore, before you go ahead and get it printed, make sure that you check that your CV is written correctly and that it is formatted correctly.Another good idea is to gain some experience in writing a CV. This can be achieved by joining a CV writing course, which is usually held once a week at some place near you. Many of these courses are a week long and you should take advantage of this.By gaining experience you will learn some essential things that can help you when writing your CV. This way you will avoid some mistakes that students make and you will also be able to tell when a person's CV is badly written. By taking on this form of training you can actually make sure that your CV is written correctly and that it is ready for a potential employer to see.You will then be in a better position to find out which CV writing classes have helped students to be able to write their CV. The CV writing course should also tell you what areas need work on and what changes need to be made. By doing this you will be able to improve your CV so that it is ready for an employer to see.

Brand Yourself and Your Business Simultaneously - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Brand Yourself and Your Business Simultaneously - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career I get a lot of questions around the difference between branding a person, relative to a business. The main idea, especially with entrepreneurs, is to BE THE BUSINESS. When this occurs, you are both the corporate spokesperson, as well as the credibility and reputation behind the actual product or service. Customers will be purchasing based on your brand, as well as the offering. Personal brand spotlight G.L. Hoffman is a prime example of an individual who has become his business. When you think of JobDig.com or digging your job in general, he comes to mind. To me, digging your job is like career nirvana. Your job, in this way, becomes a mere hobby, instead of work. G.L. is a serial entrepreneur and wears other hats, such as a venture investor, operator, incubator and mentor. Hes also a blogger and writer for the US News and World Report.. Although G.L. may have put his hands in a variety of businesses, he recognized and applauds those who actually enjoy what they do for a living. Business brand spotlight JobDig is an employment-focused media company that delivers multi-channel recruitment advertising solutions to employers. G.L. also publishes a free weekly jobs newspaper and he owns LinkUp.com, which aggregates and publishes only jobs listed on corporate sites. G.L.s brand strategy So now your asking, what is so special about the way G.L. is marketing his brand? Why are you writing about him and not me? G.L. understands how important it is to build relationships virtually and in reality. We both had made contact a long time ago and rekindled our relationship about a month ago. G.L. has embodied his brand in a dog, which he has used as a stuffed animal (right), an award and all over his website. In this way, the brand becomes mobile, traveling from website to website and even into your physical hand (Thanks G.L.). In my opinion, G.L. has gone far beyond most marketers to deliver a product, some knowledge and an experience met by a brand. Key take-aways 1) Branding is not just about gathering as many links as possible to increase your visibility and standing in Google. Its about people viewing your logo, your picture and your name as many times as possible, so you are remembered. 2) Rewarding others (in the way I do with the Personal Brand Awards) is a great way to connect with another individual and the reciprocal nature of networking will reward you right back. 3) Going the extra mile by sending a gift in the mail goes a long way. A simple letter or promotional product is something that is not expected but always enjoyed.

Heres How You Can Get a Full Day of Work Done before Lunch -

Here’s How You Can Get a Full Day of Work Done before Lunch - If you are self-employed or if you have set tasks that you have to accomplish before you can go home then you will understand how frustrating it can be when those tasks take way longer than expected. You may find that you end up working in the office until the early hours of the morning and you may even miss out on spending time with your family as well. Luckily, there are a couple of ways for you to avoid this and by following these top tips, you may even be able to get most of your work done before lunch! Schedule Everything Every night, you need to write down the tasks that need doing, and how you are going to do them. It’s a known fact that organisation and productivity go hand-in-hand, so this can really help you to kick-start your morning. A lot of people make the mistake of overscheduling and this can cause problems if you miss the deadline on one of your tasks because everything else gets pushed back as a result. The solution to this is to create a light schedule that gives you a guideline as to when each task should be completed by. This way you have some wiggle room, but not so much that you can have a spontaneous 30-minute break. If you struggle to find time for everything, even with scheduling, then look into things like document automation as this can save you hours in the day. Clean your Office Clutter can be distracting. If you have sticky notes all over your computer reminding you of what you have to get done, then this can throw you off your game. For this reason, you need to try and clean your office the night before. When you do this, you can come in the next day feeling fresh, organised and productive and this can work wonders for your work performance. Wake Up Early If you really want to get things done, you have to get up in plenty of time. 6am is probably the latest you should be getting out of bed. If you know that you take longer to get ready in the morning, consider getting up even earlier to accommodate this. When you get up earlier, you have way more time in the day, you have a higher level of focus and you can also finish way earlier as well. Exercise There is actually scientific evidence that shows morning exercise can help you think better. It can also help you to work smarter and harder, which in turn, encourages productivity. You don’t need to sign up to the gym in order to get these benefits either, a quick 30-minute jog in the morning is more than enough for you to sharpen your mind and it can also wake you up as well. If you don’t think that you have time for this then getting up even earlier may be the solution. Sure, you won’t like it the first few mornings but eventually you will get into a routine and the results will speak for themselves.

Grown Up Gigs Claire Beaudreault - Writer + Rapper + Nail Artist! - When I Grow Up

Grown Up Gigs Claire Beaudreault - Writer + Rapper + Nail Artist! - When I Grow Up Picture it: A girl arrives in NYC with 2 suitcases, $1000, no job, and no apartment. She has her BFA in theater, with a concentration in puppetry. She moves to NYC with the goal of getting an office job and doing her art in her spare time. Always identifying as a multi-hyphenate, she  dabbles in burlesque, drums, and selling art online while being a Customer Service rep for Etsy. The irony is not lost on her that she supports artists in quitting their jobs and living their dream careers, yet she  wont allow it for herself. Its 2011. She decides to get serious about making money from her creativity and takes 12 weeks to work through The Artists Way. She becomes a nail artist and rapper in the process, by sharing her work and having a big mouth. She quits her job in late 2011 when all of her hobbies have become sources of income. She realizes that all of my slashes inform each other. Its 2015. She takes a job as a Writer (capital W!) at a dream company. Now she gets to do what other people do when theyre slacking off at their day job while recording and touring with her rap group and saying Yes to  the nail gigs that pay her well. Wanna hear what she learned along the way, and how she stays true to her mutli-hyphenate nature? Click here to hear Claires  story  in Episode 8 of Grown Up Gigs!   Show Notes: find Claires nail art site here, her hip-hop group here, and here on Tumblr and  Instagram  and Twitter Ditch Your Day Job with me here (bonuses from Batchbook and Bidsketch) Backstage The Artists Way Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, its just not that good. Its trying to be good, it has potential, but its not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesnt have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I t ook longer to figure out how to do this than anyone Ive ever met. Its gonna take awhile. Its normal to take awhile. Youve just gotta fight your way through. -Ira Glass Austin Kleon Esmé  Wang and her Grown Up Gigs episode Binder Con Gina Edwards Carrie Brownstein Tom Waits Rza from Wu-Tang Clan Lucy Lius paintings Shark Week video and Lena Dunham video Barkbox and Barkpost Join me on June 25th for the next  Grown Up Gigs podcast, where I interview  the Owner of Lauren Caselli Events, my former client  Lauren Caselli!
